Getting around in London ...

... seems difficult, but is easier than you would think. First you'll need a tube map. See the following link:

LONDON UNDERGROUND

Then you should know the name of your station and which line you have to take.

We were living along the Central Line, in the north east of London. Can you see the loop of the "red line"?
YES, now you should find this station.

The college is situated at 69 - 70 Great Eastern Street, the nearest tube station is
Liverool Street.

This is the college building:

If you are interested in more information about the college follow the above link.

If you want to see something and you are tired of walking around you can take a bus.

Taxis are very traditional, but they are more expensive of course!

Sometimes they can get stuck in a traffic jam.

Docklands Tour

On Monday we went on a tour around the Docklands where the former Port of London was situated.
Today the container ships are too big to come to London. Therefore the Port of London has moved nearer to the North Sea leaving all the warehouses and other port facilities in London useless and deserted.

After some years a lot of modern buildings emerged on the Isle of Dogs as the area of the old port was called. Today you can find modern office blockes, banks, news agencies, stock exchange offices and expensive shops in the area called Canary Wharf.

We walked there but also took the DLR (Dockland light Railway). Its trains are running without a driver and it is connected to the  London Tube System.

the tour started at the TOWER

How we were shivering!

Here are some additional impressions from our walking tour through the City of London.
For a walking tour in February you'll need:

warm clothes like:

wolly hats and scarves, gloves, ear muffs, hooded anoraks, boots, boys do not forget your "long johns"(!)

After the tour hot tea or mulled wine is advisable.

City walking tour

On Thursday afternoon one of the teachers from the college took us on a tour around the City of London.
First we took the Tube (Northern Line) and when we alighted (= got off) we were on the south side of the River Thames.
We saw Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral and the new skyscraper called the Shard in a distance.
On our way back via London Bridge we were shivering a lot because of the icy temperatures. Our guide also seemed to have problems with the frosty temperatures because we was very much in a hurry.

Furthermore we passed an interesting-looking building which was used as movie scene background for Batman's "Gotham City". Watch the pictures carefully and you will find out which one it is.
We found the site of St Dunstan's Church near the Monument which is now a ruin, and a very quiet place in the middle of busy London.
But it was too cold to take rest, so we hurried on to follow our guide...

Visit to the HOXTON HOTEL

http://www.hoxtonhotels.com

With “Hoxton Hotel is modern, simple and functional” the charming manager welcomed us when we made an excursion to the Hoxton Hotel in London.
In groups of 5 we were shown around in a quick way. Via elevator the tour started on the fifth floor – room 508.

“Scissors, stone, paper” was immediately in my view. “Everybody should find something that they already know, everybody in the world, something which makes a comfortable feeling and maybe keep a smile on the guests face. So, the designer put this saying on the pillows. Guests can find a little brown bag in the desk drawer which they can put at the door knob to get a breakfast in it just for taking it away when they are maybe busy.
A fully-equiped self service area waits in the meeting area downstairs - divided into small rooms, soft light and wisdom sayings on the ceiling. Cosiness, athmosphere and clear lines make a good feeling and an optimal working base. Just a few walls allow a quick and accessible walk through the hotel.
Next to the meeting room there is the “Hoxton Grill”. Well-dressed staff members serve the 50s-style food like burgers and steaks in a luxury facility.
The Hoxton is very often fully-booked and busy like the whole of London is, but it tries to do everything that a customer can relax and feel well while staying there.
Every little detail is thought of and involved in planning. And this is surpassed by the friendly smile of the employees and the behaviour that gives a feeling of equality.
The people make the difference.        (author K.K.)

From snowy Germany to sunny London!
