City Tour

14th November 

Am Donnerstag unternahmen wir  mit Lorraine eine City Tour durch London. Hier konnten wir die Weltmetropole kennen lernen und die beeindruckende Architektur der Stadt bestaunen. Es wartete ein Wolkenkratzer nach dem anderen mit viel historischem Hintergrund auf uns.

Wir starteten an unserem College in der Nähe der Liverpoool Street Station und "kämpften" uns in zwei Stunden bis zur Tower Bridge durch.

Der Anblick dieser Sehenswürdigkeit besänftigte alle Gemüter, denn das Wetter war an diesem Tag nicht gerade auf unserer Seite - aber wahrscheinlich sind wir auch von der Londoner Sonne zu sehr verwöhnt.

Besuch des HOXTON HOTELS

13th November 

 

Am Mittwoch, dem 13.11.2013, stand auf unserem Stundenplan der Besuch des Hoxton Hotels in London. Einfach ein tolles, unkompliziertes Hotel für Jung und Alt – Familien oder Singles. Super Lage, schöne moderne Zimmer im jugendlichen Stil. Nachdem wir freundlich in Empfang genommen wurden, machten wir einen Rundgang durch das Hotel.

Das Design ist ausgerichtet auf die 80er Jahre und wenn man genauer hinschaut, kann man mit einem Blick die Liebe fürs Detail erkennen. Super ist auch das gratis Frühstück: Man hängt sein Papiertäschchen vor die Tür und findet am nächsten morgen darin: eine Banane, ein Becher mit Früchten, Jogurt und Müsli, sowie einen Orangensaft. Wasser, Milch, sowie Kaffee und Tee gibt es auf dem Zimmer eh immer umsonst. Anders ist auch hier, dass man die Minibarprodukte zum Supermarktpreis erwerben kann. Abends kann man sich im Restaurant verwöhnen lassen oder lässt den Abend mit Freunden, in der gemütlich mit Kamin eingerichteten Lobby ausklingen.

Das Hoxton ist fünf Minuten von der U-Bahn Station Old Street und zehn Minuten von der Liverpool Street Station entfernt, so dass man ohne Probleme mit der U-Bahn die schönen Dinge von London erkunden kann. 

Sollte man einen Raum benötigen für Seminare, Schulungen etc., ist das Hoxton genau das Richtige. 

Die meeting rooms sind liebevoll hergerichtet, so als sitze man im eigenen Wohnzimmer. Selbst dort fehlt es an nichts, angefangen von Getränken über Bleistifte bis hin zu Süßigkeiten. Der Nachteil jedoch ist, es gibt keine festen Zimmerpreise. Bezahlt man heute für ein Doppelzimmer 50 Pounds können es morgen je nach Auslastungsgrad 150 Pounds sein .

Eileen's & Liesa's host family

12th November

 

Wir sind sind Liesa & Eileen und wohnen in South Woodford bei Familie Lyon. Nikki Lyon lebt zusammen mit ihrem Mann Ben in einem eigenen Haus mit Garten.
Ben ist Direktor (head teacher) an einem Gymnasium und  Nikki ist selbstständig.
Sie haben zwei Kinder, Sohn Oliver (3), Tochter Sophie (11) und einen Hund.
Untergebracht sind wir in einem gemütlichen Zimmer. Das Essen ist sehr gut, unsere Gastfamilie verwöhnt uns rund um die Uhr. Jeden Morgen bekommen wir sogar einen Kaffee an unser Bett gebracht. Im Haus ist alles sehr sauber und ordentlich und wir fühlen uns wie zu Hause.
Wir geniessen die Zeit bei unserer Gastfamilie und in London.

London by night

11th November

My trip began with the Tube. I travelled to Oxford Circus at sunset. After finding the way out of the station I walked through Oxford Street to Piccadilly Circus. My first impression of this place was: WOW, it looks like Times Square with the traffic of Italy!
My next stop was Covent Garden. It is a nice place where I found some theatres and a restaurant of Jamie Oliver.Then I moved southwards to the Thames, on the way I came to Bush House - a really, really big and grandiose complex. Some metres away there was a pub called "The Wellington" where I took a short rest. After that I walked across Waterloo Bridge. You have a good view over the Thames with the skyline of the town. 

At the end of the bridge I turned right and stood in front of the Royal Festival Hall, a giant festival hall. I walked three minutes and I stood in front of the London Eye. It looks really great with its blue colour and Westminster in the background.

Next to the London Eye is the County Hall with the Dungeon and the Sea Life. So, I moved on and suddenly I stood at the beginning of Westminster Bridge. There you can go some steps down and you have a very good view of the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben.I crossed the bridge and stood in front of Big Ben. It looks beautiful. Then I thought, I can watch Westminster Abbey. It looks fascinating. In front of the Abbey there are crowns for the fallen soldiers of World War I and II.

Then I went back to the next underground station, Westminster, and went back to my London host family in Woodford.

Our way to LONDON

On Sunday 10th November 12 students of the college of hotel management at our school, one apprentice of the Restaurant Hopfenberg, two apprentices of the Hotel Pullman am Dom, and their English teacher are on their way to London by plane.
The other five apprentices (from the Hotel Mercure and the Restaurant Zumnorde) are a bit more "adventurous", they take the train via Frankfurt and Brussels to London St Pancras.

We all meet on Monday at 9 am in front of Liverpool Street Station to walk to the college together, where the lessons will start at 9.30 am.

Der deutsche Schulalltag hat uns lange wieder in seinen Bann gezogen, viele unserer Erlebnisse sind nun schöne Erinnerungen geworden und wir drücken der nächsten Klasse die Daumen, dass auch sie die Möglichkeit haben, das Londoner College zu besuchen.

Eine unserer ersten Überlegungen war es, wie kann man so viel wie möglich erleben ohne viel Geld auszugeben. Nach langem Stöbern im Internet fanden wir eine Seite mit den Angeboten, die für uns genau das  Richtige waren.

Wer gerne in das Madame Tussauds, zum Dungeon, auf das London Eye  oder in den Londoner Zoo gehen möchte, für den ist das genau das Richtige. Selbst für Speisen findet man günstige Angebote.

Voraussetzung, um das Angebot nutzen zu können, ist, beide Personen brauchen die Travelcard, die man z.B. an der Liverpool Street Station am Schalter kaufen  kann. Preislich gibt es kein Unterschied zur Oystercard die ebenfalls 43,60 Pfund pro Woche (Stand Februar 2013) kostet. Für die Travelcard benötigt man ein Passbild, da es einen Ausweis zur Fahrkarte dazu gibt.

Angebote, die wir nutzten, waren zum einen Madame Tussauds. Statt 30 Pfund pro Person zahlten wir mit der Travelcard 15 Pfund pro Person und konnten so einiges sehen.

Ein weiteres Angebot, an dem wir unsere Höhenangst überwinden mussten, war das London Eye, welches man gegen Abend besuchen sollte, um ein herrliches Lichtermeer betrachten zu können. 

135 Meter in die Höhe und statt 19,80 Pfund pro Person zahlten wir 9,90 Pfund und es hat sich sehr gelohnt. Ein Highlight, was wir nur weiter empfehlen können.

We were living along the Central Line, in the north east of London. Can you see the loop of the "red line"?

YES, now you should find this station.

The college is situated at 69 - 70 Great Eastern Street, the nearest tube station is
Liverool Street.

Taxis are very traditional, but they are more expensive of course!

Docklands Tour

On Monday we went on a tour around the Docklands where the former Port of London was situated.
Today the container ships are too big to come to London. Therefore the Port of London has moved nearer to the North Sea leaving all the warehouses and other port facilities in London useless and deserted.

After some years a lot of modern buildings emerged on the Isle of Dogs as the area of the old port was called. Today you can find modern office blockes, banks, news agencies, stock exchange offices and expensive shops in the area called Canary Wharf.

We walked there but also took the DLR (Dockland light Railway). Its trains are running without a driver and it is connected to the  London Tube System.
